A Box Within a Box

A Box Within a Box

For the past year we've had a consistently large pile of steel framing taking up space; this week we made big strides in the framing of the tiny home project to eliminate that pile.

The Changing Landscape

The Changing Landscape

The past couple of weeks have brought us crazy warm December weather where we focused on framing the bedroom doorway and framing the interior. Fritz was thrilled to sit outside!

We settled on a door for the furnace in which the door attaches much like a picture frame does to the backing. In the pictures above you can see us welding the frame so we could install it with the wood. The actual door with the glass has yet to be finished.

We also cut wood to finish the door way into the bedroom where we will eventually have a sliding door with barn hardware.

A Slow Fall

A Slow Fall

We thought moving in would fuel the fire for progress. We didn't anticipate how good it would feel to sit in our bed in our house after a long day. We didn't anticipate how damaging the short days would be. We didn't anticipate job stress to throw us off so far. There have been some small achievements and for now, I'll take solace in that and celebrate them.

The First Flush

The First Flush

Friends,

We're leaving for a three day vacation in an hour but I wanted to post a quick update.

I HAVE A POTTY.

This past week, Noah got the toilet in working order. There are still a few things to fix, one being a leak from the water tank, but at this point we're both thrilled to have a toilet that works. No more potty breaks outside! Things are also just roughed in -- not only will we get a new water tank that better first the space, we'll also be moving the toilet when we have a more exact place for it to live.

Small Victories

Small Victories

Last week strep got a hold of me and held on through the weekend; luckily Noah was able to get some things done.

Noah got to work constructing a platform for the composting section of the toilet, which seemed to appear within minutes. As far as things go, the platform is no work of art; it's a product of his theatre school experience but I remain impressed. He puts so much energy and love in to every decision and I continue to be inspired by that.

Envirolet Composting Toilet

Envirolet Composting Toilet

This week we got started on our composting toilet. The big reveal came when we unpacked the black water composting unit (seen above as the giant black box). It came with goodies like the toilet paper and composting mix. We got started on the exterior exhaust for the composting unit.  We realized that we needed to order some different lengths to get this done.  So, hopefully we'll get this part wrapped up this week.

Putting the Room in Bedroom

Putting the Room in Bedroom

Hello Friends!

This past week, we finished the ceiling (probably the hardest and physically demanding part yet). Unfortunately for Noah, helping him install the larger panels was very difficult for me. I guess I'm just not accustomed to holding heaving sheets of wood above my head.

A Place to Crash

A Place to Crash

There's not much to say about our last month. Parts have been purchased. Research has happened. We've installed some power stuff that can run our 3 air handlers without the generator. But there's not much visually to see.

A Place to Sleep

A Place to Sleep

When we last left off on our progress on August 17th we weren't sure when the foam guys were coming. Luckily for us, they called the next day and gave us a two hour notice to finish up a few things. The main item on the to-do list was dealing with the tail light wires that I mentioned in our last update. Noah added conduit to surround it and constructed a box to close off the end, as shown in the pictures above. The guy who came to insulate the bedroom was extremely professional and tidy, as shown in the image above with all the plastic.

A Look Back: Openings, The Process

A Look Back: Openings, The Process

We recently had someone write in with questions about how we cut the openings for the windows and door so Noah put together this outline:
